21 Itty Bitty Baby Animals Learning About the Big World With Mom by Their Side

When do we start appreciating all the little ways our moms have always looked after us?

When I was younger, especially as a teenager, I didn't always appreciate her reminders. Eat something. Take a jacket. Are you really going out like that? I felt very capable of deciding if I was cold, thank you, mom. Now that I'm an adult, I notice the care behind those questions and I truly appreciate them. My mom was paying attention to things I wasn't thinking about. She wanted me fed, warm and okay. Teenage me would have been annoyed to hear that one day I would admit she had a point about the jacket.

Now I go to her with questions all the time. The truth is I really want her opinion when I'm making a big decision about something happening in my life. If I'm considering buying something, maybe my mom knows the perfect place to buy it from. And other times I might need her help with something as simple and ordinary as trying to cook dinner. I still consider myself a baby in the kitchen and she's a super adult. TikTok videos are not as clear as a 5-minute call with my mom, in which she can explain her recipe better and I can keep asking questions until I fully understand what she's talking about. Sometimes our conversation ends up covering everything: life advice, shopping advice, cooking guidance.

And she's there for me, explaining things, helping me out, listening to me and supporting me. I like hearing how she would do something, even when I could probably figure it out myself. I also want to tell her my news. When something interesting happens, I think, "Oh, can't wait to tell mom!"

I've been thinking about motherhood lately because some friends of mine have just become parents. Their son, Simon, was born only two days ago!! They're the first close friends my age to have a baby. I'm still getting used to referring to them as parents. It's so crazy and sweet that these people are a little person's parents now. Seriously, you can't imagine how little he is.
I knew I would be happy for my friends. I've been happy for them since they told me the great news that they were expecting a baby, but I'm surprised by how moved I am now that their son's been born. I think about everything Simon has ahead of him and how my friends will help him get to know the world. They'll be figuring things out as parents, too. And it's crazy that my group of friends and I are so invested in this tiny person's life, and he hasn't had to do anything to make us love him. The mere fact of existing was enough.

One day, my friends' son might find their reminders annoying, too. That thought makes me smile. All that care will be there long before he can understand how much it means. I hope he gets to appreciate those everyday gestures one day, the same way I learned to appreciate my mom's.

So these itty-bitty baby animals beside their moms feel particularly adorable to me right now in a different way. The little version next to the grown-up one makes me think about how much they still have to learn, and how their moms play a crucial role in teaching them about the world. In my case, I'm an adult now, yet I still have questions. Actually, I have a few about tonight's dinner.
